5 HIIT Workouts That Maximize Fat Loss

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has become one of the most popular and effective workout methods for burning fat and improving cardiovascular fitness. The science is clear: HIIT workouts can burn more calories in less time compared to traditional steady-state cardio.

What makes HIIT so effective is the 'afterburn effect' or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Your body continues to burn calories at an elevated rate for hours after your workout as it works to restore itself to its pre-exercise state.

Workout 1: The Tabata Protocol

The classic Tabata protocol involves 20 seconds of all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated 8 times for a total of 4 minutes. Choose any exercise - burpees, mountain climbers, or jump squats work great.

Workout 2: The 30-30 Intervals

This workout alternates between 30 seconds of high-intensity work and 30 seconds of active recovery. Complete 10-15 rounds for a powerful fat-burning session.

Workout 3: The Pyramid

Start with 10 seconds of work, rest for 10 seconds, then 20 seconds of work, 20 seconds rest, building up to 50 seconds and back down. This keeps your body guessing and maximizes calorie burn.

Workout 4: EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute)

At the start of each minute, complete a set number of reps of an exercise. Rest for the remainder of the minute. As you get faster, your rest periods increase, rewarding your effort.

Workout 5: The Finisher

Complete as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in 10 minutes: 10 burpees, 20 mountain climbers, 30 jumping jacks. This is perfect for adding to the end of any strength session.

Remember to warm up properly before any HIIT session and listen to your body. Start with 2-3 HIIT workouts per week and allow adequate recovery time between sessions.
